Architectural Society of China is a national academic institute constituted by the professionals of architectural science and technology in China. It is the member institute of China Association for Science and Technology and closely related by profession to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
ASC was founded on 23 October 1953. Mr. Liang Sicheng, Mr. Yang Tingbao and other famous Chinese architects assumed the leadership in the following years. Many members present at the first Council Meeting are from the Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture. ASC convenes the most outstanding experts, scholars and engineering technicians of the architectural field in China, and becomes the reliable think-tank and assistant to the government in promoting the urban and rural development.
The objective of ASC is to promote the development and prosperity of the Chinese architectural culture, implement the state strategy of invigorating the country through science, technology and education as well as the strategy of sustainable development, unite and organize all professionals of architectural field in China, insists on the policy of "letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend", encourage the academic attitude of seriousness and matter-of -fact, promote the blossom and development of the architectural science and technology as well as its popularization and generalization, promote the growth and progress of the professional talents, serve the national urban and rural construction development.
Since its establishment, ASC has carried out various international exchange activities.
It has expanded its global influence by joining scientific and technological organizations around the world, conducting bilateral and multilateral exchanges, promoting international talent training and hosting international conferences.
The ASC joined the International Union of Architects (UIA) as a national member in 1955 and the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) as a national member in 1989. It was one of the initiators of the Recognition of Substantial Equivalency between Accreditation/Validation Systems in Architectural Education (Referred to as the Canberra Accord) and today is the governing unit of the APEC Registered Architect Central Council.
The ASC has undertaken the work of the secretariat of the APEC Registered Architect Central Council, and recommended members of the ASC to serve as the chairman, vice chairman and director of the UIA, the ARCASIA and the Canberra Accord.
It also conducts bilateral and multilateral exchanges through going out and inviting in, and has established academic exchanges and friendships with organizations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Mongolia, Brazil, Belarus as well as other countries and regions.
In addition, the ASC maintains close communication and exchanges with relevant architect organizations in China's Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
The Journal of Asia Architecture and Building Engineering sponsored by the Architectural Societies of China, Japan and South Korea has been included in the SCI index.
Important international conferences and events organized by the ASC in China in recent years include: the 20th World Congress of Architects (1999, Beijing), the 12th ARCASIA Forum (2006, Beijing), the 7th and the 10th International Symposium on Architectural Interchanges in Asia (2008, Beijing; 2014, Hangzhou), the UIA Executive Board (2005, Shanghai; 2011, Nanjing), the UIA Council Meeting (2007, Xi’an; 2013, Beijing), the ARCASIA Executive Board (2013, Weihai; 2018, Shanghai), the World Congress of Architects China Pavilion Exhibition (2011, Tokyo; 2014, Durban; 2017, Seoul), the Canberra Accord 3rd Congress (2011, Beijing) , the Sino-British Architecture Student Exchange Workshop (2012, Beijing; 2014, Harbin), the Sino-Korea Architecture Student Exchange Workshop (2016, Xi'an; 2018, Shanghai), and the 8th meeting of APEC Registered Architect Central Council(2018, Zhengzhou) .
The Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize, sponsored by the ASC and supported by the UIA, recognizes and honors architects, theorists and educators in architecture who have made great achievements and contributions in their professional field.
